Sunshine is one of the few abundant things in the desert region of Medenine, where services and economic opportunities are scarce. Sunshine is also the biggest threats to the health of XP children. A reminder not to take enjoying a sunny day for granted; and a call not to forget those who cannot.

“The children of the moon” are children affected by Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic condition of hypersensitivity to UV light. This means that any exposure to sunlight or other sources of UV radiation can result in a very high risk of developing skin and eye cancer from an early age. It is only under the moonlight that they can freely play outdoors; while their peers are sleeping to prepare for their next day at school. Tunisia is one of the countries in the world with the highest incidence of XP, and most cases are concentrated in desert areas, where the sun shines in all seasons. Coupled with the precarious financial situation of many families, the lack of places adapted to the protection needs of XP children prevents most children to leave their homes during the day, inevitably resulting in their social isolation.   The Association des Enfants de la Lune de Medenine (Children of the Moon Association in Medenine – AELM) was established in 2012 to support XP-children and their families in their struggle to live a normal life.

The funds raised through the sales of the “children of the moon” line, will thus go towards an educational centre for the children of the moon, where they can have contact with non-XP children while receiving the necessary medical care and support.
